BirdTrack and Garden BirdWatch

16 Nov 2015 Blackbird by Edwyn Anderton

A regular query we receive is how to use BirdTrack alongside the BTO Garden BirdWatch (GBW) survey. With birds returning to gardens in search of food as winter approaches, it's a good time to revisit this topic.

Garden BirdWatchers consistently record the maximum counts of the species using their garden over the course of a week, in order to monitor how and when birds use gardens. Each GBW submission covers a whole week, and doesn't include birds flying over. Garden BirdWatchers can use BirdTrack to log fly-overs or birds outside their garden. Only mark BirdTrack records of birds in your garden as complete lists if they are from a focused period of observation, ideally outdoors.
