Spurn Migfest and BTO Conference

15 Sep 2015 Spurn Migration Festival 2015

The BirdTrack team were really pleased to take part in this year's Spurn Migration Festival, 4–6 September. Spurn is a wonderful site to highlight and witness bird migration and this year was no exception, with migrants such as Whinchat, Lesser Whitethroat, Pied and Spotted Flycatchers and a fine juvenile Red-backed Shrike logged during walks on Saturday morning. In the afternoon the focus was on seabirds, with the strong northwesterly bringing Sooty and Manx Shearwaters, as well as skuas and auks, close enough to shore to give good views.

Calmer conditions on Sunday morning meant migration of commoner species such as Siskin, Yellow Wagtail and Meadow Pipit was more obvious. A Great Spotted Woodpecker moving south over Kilnsea shows that even species typically considered to be 'resident' do migrate! On the way home, the team were lucky enough to connect with a migrant at the other end of the rarity spectrum: a juvenile Black Stork!

Another great event for your diary is coming up later in the year: the BTO Annual Conference at the Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick 46 December.
