Spring is coming

04 Mar 2014 Wheatear and Little Ringed Plover by Jon Lowes Early March, sunny and fairly mild weather, the first few bumblebees and Brimstone butterflies on the wing. A southerly airflow forecast for the weekend. All in all, perfect conditions for the first returning summer migrants. Wheatear reports began filtering in on 1 March, with the first Sand Martins arriving on the south coast as early as 25 February. Little Ringed Plover should start to appear within the next week or so, quickly followed by (non-wintering) Chiffchaffs. In previous years, April and May have seen the highest volume of BirdTracking activity. It would be great if the good weather – after a wet, wild and generally unpleasant winter – and seemingly early start to spring encourages more birdwatchers to start early too, taking advantage of the conditions to get outside and log what they see and hear.
