Sun worshipper

27 Jul 2012 Grey Heron by Margaret Holland

Many species of bird, such as the Grey Heron pictured here, will open their wings and face them towards the Sun during periods of warm sunshine. The precise reason for this behaviour - termed 'sunning', unsurprisingly - is something of a mystery. Plausible explanations include taking advantage of the Sun's energy to kill feather parasites or aid digestion. Whatever the reason for doing it, Margaret Holland did very well to catch some sunning behaviour this summer, considering the weather!
