The BirdTrends Report

This BTO report, updated annually, is a one-stop shop for information about the population status of our common terrestrial birds. It is based on data gathered by many thousands of volunteers who contribute to BTO-led surveys.

With one web page per species, users can quickly find all the key information about trends in population size and breeding performance, as measured by BTO monitoring schemes.


Birds of Conservation Concern

The fourth quantitative review of the status of the birds that occur regularly in the UK, updated December 2015, which makes use of BBS trend information.


Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey (WCBS) newsletters

UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS)

The UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme is organized and funded by Butterfly Conservation, the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, the British Trust for Ornithology, and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee.

  • All UKBMS reports are available from the UKBMS website, and include data collected by BBS volunteers during the Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey.

Population Trends of Common Birds in Europe

This publication reports on the population trends of common breeding birds in Europe for the period 1980–2021. The table with all PECBMS common species trends is included and the main indicators for Europe are described.

Tracking Mammals Partnership update

The Tracking Mammals Partnership (TMP) aims to provide up-to-date and reliable information about the status and population trends of UK land mammals. BBS mammal trends contribute to the Tracking Mammals Partnership.


Seabird Monitoring Programme Report 1986–2019

Breeding seabirds in the UK are not monitored by the BBS. Since 2022, the Seabird Monitoring Programme has been managed by a Partnership of BTO and JNCC, in association with RSPB. This report marks the latest information on the UK's seabird populations.
