The BTO Nest Record Scheme started life as the ‘Hatching and Fledging Enquiry’ set up by Sir Julian Huxley and James Fisher in 1939. The first studies mainly concentrated on gathering the basic facts about the breeding biology of British birds, including Willow Warbler, Treecreeper and Ring Ouzel.
More recently, NRS data have been used to determine the factors responsible for influencing the breeding success of a wide range of species and, together with information from other BTO surveys, to explore the relationship between productivity and population size. The following is a list of published papers that have utilised Nest Record Scheme data.
