Project Owl looking for volunteers

10 Aug 2018 Tawny Owl by Howard Stockdale/BTO

Owing to their largely nocturnal habits, owls are one of the more difficult groups of birds to survey. National surveys of Tawny Owl took place in 1989 and 2005, and the BTO is starting a new survey from this month onwards.

The first phase involves point count surveys in tetrads that can be selected online, with the survey running from 15 August to 15 October. The Tawny Owl Calling Survey is focused on recording calling birds, and runs weekly from September until March of next year. As well as Tawny Owl, there are plans to survey other owl species, such as Short-eared and Long-eared Owls, in the future.
