Improved coverage of remote/upland areas is a high priority but it is hard to find volunteers who are willing/able to visit these areas. This course is therefore offered at the subsidised rate of £5 – payable in advance to confirm your booking – to maximise attendance and hence participation in upland monitoring.

Additional information

Brush up your upland bird identification skills and practice survey techniques for the Breeding Bird Survey in the uplands. Learn more about the BBS ‘Upland Rovers’ scheme and how to get involved. This scheme allows one-off visits to upland BBS squares – a great way to explore new parts of Scotland while contributing valuable information.

The day will combine indoor and outdoor sessions (weather permitting), with a focus on encouraging participation. Outdoor sessions may involve crossing uneven terrain with no paths and with moderate ascent.

Bring your binoculars, notepad and pen and dress for the weather forecasted. We advise warm layers, waterproof clothing, sturdy boots/shoes, hat and gloves. If you have a GPS device, or smart phone with this capability, then please bring this. Likewise, if you have a map of the area and a compass, bring these too.

Please also bring a packed lunch.
