Our work in Wales

The culture and politics of Wales make it unique and challenging to get right. This means we need an approach suited to Wales which our staff are well placed to provide.

The high-quality evidence is objective and provided impartially, and informs Welsh Government, conservation, and land management decision makers. To support this, we engage with large numbers of dedicated bird survey volunteers, and seek to develop, and support them at all times. There are times when a different approach is called for and the BTO’s extensive network of volunteers is complemented by scientists, professional fieldworkers and research collaborators and partners.

Wales is a wonderful place for both birds and people. There are times when difficult decisions will need to be made which could impact on our delicate ecosystems. Our science being independent and impartial is critical, and enables the decision makers to be well informed. We focus on Welsh habitats, species and policy relevant issues, delivered within the BTO’s UK-wide research framework.
