A Less Green and Pleasant Land: Our Threatened Wildlife

A Less Green and Pleasant Land covers an impressively broad sweep of topics, not only documenting the biological wealth of Britain and Ireland, but also the full range of what human actions past, present and future could mean for this heritage. The book comprises three main sections, the first dealing with anthropogenic change, the second giving an overview of biotic diversity and describing some of the best places in these islands to experience wildlife, and the third considering what the future may hold. Much of the information is obviously taken from recent sources, but its wide scope means that it cannot be comprehensive. Some topics and areas receive much greater attention than others of equal importance, and the book is obviously not intended as a definitive or specialist reference to conservation issues. Rather, it is aimed squarely at the wider British and Irish public, written for people who enjoy wildlife and want to find out more about our natural heritage, and how we can influence it for better or worse. Rich with personal experience and anecdotes, the core of the book is a plea to everyone who cares about the world they live in to take note, and take action.
