Mallard Anas platyrhynchos

The Mallard is one of our most familiar waterbirds. It is a relatively large, heavily built duck. The female is mainly brown with an orange bill. The male has a bottle green head, a yellow bill, is mainly maroon-brown on the breast and grey on the body, except during eclipse, when the plumage resembles that of a female, except in retaining the yellow bill. Both sexes have a distinct dark blueish speculum, bordered by white margins.

It is a resident species found on many waterbodies throughout the UK. Although easily detected during WeBS counts, this is a species that is widely dispersed throughout lowland wetland habitats and consequently, many birds on smaller lakes and rivers go uncounted.
