Swan in the pond

GBW-ers Wendy and John Dowse, West Sussex, found a juvenile Mute Swan, seemingly lost, in their cul-de-sac. Mute Swans require quite a run up in order to get airborne and so this youngster probably needed help to find a more suitable location. John ushered the young swan up the drive and into their enclosed back garden, while a neighbour called a local animal rescue society. The swan soon discovered Wendy and John's small garden pond and spent the rest of its time here, eating weed from the edge and scanning the silt in the bottom. When the rescue van arrived the man dropped some bread to attract the swan's attention and then, with one quick movement, grabbed the swan and lifted it out. He took it to the local river where there is a crèche of immature swans.
