Black-bellied Dipper

08 Feb 2013 Black-bellied Dipper by Amy Lewis

In early November, BTO Director of Services Andrew Scott was walking his dog when he noticed a Dipper under one of the bridges in Thetford. British Dippers are highly sedentary and the nearest breeders to Norfolk are in the Peak District, so thoughts turned to the north European nominate race, Black-bellied Dipper – a rare winter visitor. Being less than 1km from BTO HQ, the bird quickly generated lots of interest, and was seen again the next morning. Although it played hide and seek until the year-end, it has been faithful to a short stretch of streams since the New Year. It is already vying for the most-recorded individual bird in BirdTrack in 2013, with 102 records so far!
