What's with all the Waxwings?

09 Nov 2012 Waxwing reporting rate by week

The percentage of complete lists featuring Waxwing has rocketed over the last week. Whilst the majority have been seen in northern and eastern Britain, some have gone 'over the top', delighting birdwatchers in western Ireland, Cornwall and the Scilly isles. True to form, Scotland has received the largest flocks to date, 400 on Skye on 5 November being the biggest so far. Whether or not this will be a 'Waxwing winter' remains to be seen but the early signs are that the arrival has been on a par with the last big winter for Waxwings, 2010, and well above the 7-year average.
