Water Rail

Ringing recoveries show that the British and Irish Water Rail population is augmented in the winter by birds from Fennoscandia and central Europe. Although freezing weather conditions in some winters generally offer the best opportunities to see Water Rails, the arrival of these autumn migrants, and subsequent increase in 'sharming' (squealing calls), contributes to a sharp rise in the reporting rate during late October / November.
