Back so soon?

22 Jun 2012 Green Sandpiper by Nick Stacey

Waders begin moving south notably early. Failed and non breeding birds are the first to appear back in Britain and Ireland, followed by adults that have bred successfully. The reporting rates for Green Sandpiper - traditionally one of the earliest species to reappear - and Spotted Redshank are already starting to reflect these movements. Many of the first wave of birds to arrive are still in near-perfect breeding plumage, making June a great time for wader-watching.
