Little Egrets on a high

02 Dec 2011 Little Egret by John Walton

Little Egrets are continuing to expand their range in Britain and Ireland, and whilst the reporting rate usually drops to about 10% at this time of year, it has remained more or less constant at 15% this autumn. Whether this is a product of the unusually mild November weather, or the ever-increasing population, is not clear but the pattern is certainly striking. The 2011 distribution map shows that there are 'hotspots' (10-km squares with 25+ records) as far north as Teesside.
