Brambling: Back to normal

25 Nov 2011 Brambling by Graham Allbutt

After a bumper Brambling autumn in 2010, this autumn's reporting rate has much more closely matched that of 2009 (and earlier years). Perhaps Bramblings didn't have such a successful breeding season as other Fennoscandian breeders like Short-eared Owl (whose breeding success is closely associated with lemming populations), or maybe the lack of a dominant easterly airflow in October resulted in a smaller arrival this year. Incidentally, this great photograph shows enough detail to determine the age of this female Brambling - can you tell how old she is?
