Barn Owl

28 Oct 2011 Barn Owl by David Cookson

Last winter's cold snap caused high mortality among Barn Owls; this may be one reason for the rather low reporting rate during 2011, particularly in the early part of the year. It is more difficult to explain the very low number of records in the last few weeks; perhaps the mild autumn has made hunting easier than usual, hence birds have not been forced out to hunt during daylight hours.

This update is dedicated to the memory of Simon Aspinall, a passionate ecologist and birder who had a special fondness for the Barn Owls that used his owl box.
