Buff-breasted Sandpiper

16 Sep 2011 Buff-breasted Sandpiper by Jeff Copner

The last two weeks have seen an exceptional 170 records of Buff-breasted Sandpiper submitted to BirdTrack. Whilst some of these will relate to the same individuals - such as the obliging juvenile at Titchwell Marsh RSPB - the 2007-10 average for the same two week period is 55 records, which gives an indication of the scale of this year's arrival. Jeff Copner's excellent image (left) from Loop Head in Clare, Ireland, is even more remarkable when you consider that it was one of a flock of 15 birds!
