Sand Martin

22 Jul 2011 Sand Martin by Jeff Copner

Seeing 4 Sand Martins at the BTO Nunnery Lakes (where they are quite scarce) yesterday prompted me to have a look at the reporting rate, which indicates that there has been a late summer increase in observations in the past 3 years. This may be due to birds dispersing from breeding sites, like this worn adult photographed against the Atlantic Ocean! The reporting rate has actually been at its highest-ever for the past few weeks; next year's BBS report will reveal if Sand Martins have had a good breeding season.
