Wader passage peaks

06 May 2011 Whimbrel by Jeff Copner

The last few days have seen spring wader passage peak with species like Whimbrel, Bar-tailed Godwit and Wood Sandpiper all being recorded on a comparatively high proportion of complete lists. All three species have been widely recorded inland as well as round the coast, the map for Whimbrel clearly illustrating this pattern of sightings. An exceptional count of 7,320 Bar-tailed Godwits were recorded passing Dungeness, Kent on 28 April and 11 Wood Sandpipers were at Holme, Norfolk on 2 May.
