Kittiwake
Rissa tridactyla
A widespread breeder around the coast of Britain and Ireland. This is a good indicator species to assess coverage in the more remote parts of Scotland and Ireland. In the winter, Kittiwakes move away from the breeding areas and sightings from land are sporadic and often related to weather conditions. During gales, they can be recorded inland from lakes and reservoirs.
Note that the 2007-11 maps (below left) reflect only records submitted so far online and paper records loaded. We will load more paper records at the end of each fieldwork season. Check back soon to see how the picture develops. And why not take part and help fill the gaps.
