Casual Records of Golden Plovers and Lapwings
Each month several hundred dedicated surveyors have scoured their local area for flocks of Golden Plovers and Lapwings and submitted these casual records online. The table below shows the number of records and totals generated to date, and maps showing the distribution of flocks are shown for each month. Already tens of thousands of plovers have been counted. These will provide an excellent basis from which to estimate total numbers, once counts from Wetland Bird Survey sites and randomly selected tetrads have been combined and analysed.
Several observers have revisited their sites, and the 'Site maxima' column
in the table provides an estimate of the total number counted after removing
possible duplicated counts. A clear increase in numbers can be seen between
October and November as individuals of both species arrived into the
country. There was perhaps less of an increase into December, but the
difference between the Total and the Site maxima column indicates that many
people revisited their sites frequently during that month. Please help us in
the last two months of January and February to provide a winter-wide picture
of the distribution and abundance of plovers.
Records would be especially valuable around (+/- 3 days) the following
count dates to synchronise with existing monitoring schemes: 17 December
2006, 21 January 2007 and 18th February 2007. Records at other times are
also valuable.
