Field Manual* (file updated 28.7.03)
This 20 page document details all the information required to
get involved in the project, what data need to be collected and
how to submit the information gathered to BTO HQ.
Roost Registration Sheet**
Once you have identified a roost site you will need to register
the details at BTO Thetford. You will be issued a roost site number.
If this is a new ringing site you will need to assign a three-letter
site code in order to register the site at BTO HQ. If the site is
to be worked by a team of ringers who are not members of a recognised
ringing group or partnership you will need to decide who's rings
will be used, and make sure the site is registered under their permit
number.
Roost Description Sheet**
This should be filled out at the end of the season to provide
details of the size and habitat of the roost site, whether the roost
remains stable throughout the pre-migratory period and an estimate
of the number of birds using the site.
Roost Data Sheet**
To assist with recording the data in the field, we have designed
a roost data sheet which includes space for all of the extra measurements
to be recorded. Of course you do not have to use this sheet and
you may even want to design your own, but please ensure you record
all of the measurements outlined in the manual.
Ringing Summary Sheet**
As well as submitting the ringing and recapture data electronically,
please use this sheet to record a summary of each sessions catch.
We require details of the total length of mist nets used, the start
and end time for tape luring and the total numbers of Swallows ringed
and the number of juveniles & adults fully processed. Please
do not include controls and retraps in these totals, these should
be recorded in IPMR, flagging the records with your Swallow roost
number (eg SRP: 0001), in the same way as the new birds. A count
of the total number of Swallows and Sand Martins using the roost
should also be made at each catching session. Please also record
the percentage of the roost that consists of Swallows (eg if there
are 100 Sand Martins and 400 Swallows, 80% of the roost is made
up of Swallows).
Roost Extra Counts Sheet**
Counts at the roost make up an important part of the study so
if you are able to make extra visits to count the number of birds
using the site, please record details on this sheet. As before,
please estimate the total number of Swallows and Sand Martins using
the roost, and record the percentage of Swallows at the roost.
