Abstract from BTO Research Report No. 508: K. Risely, D.G. Noble
& S.R. Baillie (2008) Executive Summary This is the thirteenth annual report of the BTO/JNCC/RSPB Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), covering the years 1994 to 2007. The aim of the survey is to monitor population trends for a range of common and widespread bird species in the UK, and we present the bird population changes between 1994 and 2007, and between the two most recent years, 2006 and 2007. As well as the overall UK trends, population trends are produced for England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and for each of the nine English Government Office Regions. BBS results are increasingly used by Government and non-governmental organisations to set conservation priorities. Counts were made on 3,605 1-km squares in 2007, representing a massive effort from BBS volunteers. The BBS is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), and jointly funded by BTO, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC, the statutory adviser to Government on UK and international nature conservation, on behalf of the Council for Nature Conservation and the Countryside, the Countryside Council for Wales, Natural England and Scottish Natural Heritage) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
