IMPACT
STUDIES
The BTO undertakes large-scale studies of
populations of species whose numbers are increasing and coming into conflict
with man (e.g. Cormorants and Canada Geese) or species that live in association
with man (Starlings, House Sparrows, Pigeons and Gulls). We
are also able to provide independent, specific advice on potential bird
hazzards to engineers and designers of new constructions and developments.
Examples of studies and consultations include:
- Recovery of Waterfowl following the Sea Empress Oil Spill.
A study monitoring the distribution of feeding and roosting waders and
wildfowl throughout the tidal cycle on four intertidal sites, two oiled
and two non-oiled for Countryside Council for Wales.
- Survival of Rehabilitated Guillemots. A project analysing
natural ringing recoveries and rehabilitated recoveries of Guillemots
to compare overall rates of survival and see how rates of both have
changed over time for Countryside Council for Wales.
- Fish-eating Birds A study of the effectiveness of management
measures to control damage by fish-eating birds to inland fisheries
in England and Wales carried out for Central Science Laboratory, funded
by Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
- Population Dynamics of Canada Geese. The production of a detailed
model of British Canada Goose populations used to predict the effectiveness
of different types of measures for the control of the species for Department
of the Environment, Transport and the Regions.
- Monitoring on Findhorn Bay. A project to establish which areas
within Findhorn Bay are important for feeding and roosting waterbirds
and identify where these coincide with human disturbance. Carried out
in order to set conservation management objectives which minimise human
disturbance to wintering birds, undertaken for Scottish Natural Heritage.
- Breeding Birds in Oilseed Rape. A study of birds in oilseed
rape to determine the effects of pre-harvest operations and to determine
the nesting period for birds, for Zeneca Agrochemicals.
- Bird Interactions with Powerlines. A study on the flight paths
used by different bird species and whether these coincide with the height
of transmission lines and collision frequency, for National Power plc.
- Duddon Ornithological Assessment. As assessment of post-construction
effects of a new gas pipeline across the Duddon estuary in relation
to waterfowl distribution and feeding behaviour for British Gas plc.
- Millennium Bridge. Assessment of any likely negative
bird impacts on a new foot bridge in London over the Thames working
with the design team to minimise the risks, for Foster and Partners.
