Factors affecting the survival of
Birds of Conservation Concern

2. The Integrated Population Monitoring Programme

The Integrated Population Monitoring (IPM) programme has been developed by the BTO under the JNCC/BTO Partnership to monitor the numbers, breeding performance and survival rates of a wide variety of bird species found in the UK (Baillie, 1990, 1991).

Data concerning variation in the size of populations are obtained through several long running BTO schemes including the Common Birds Census (CBC), the Waterways Birds Survey (WBS) the BTO/JNCC/RSPB Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and the Constant Effort Sites Scheme (CES).

Changes in breeding performance are measured by the Nest Record Scheme, which records laying dates, clutch and brood sizes and nesting success. In addition, the CES provides information on productivity by measuring the ratio of juvenile to adult birds.

Data concerning survival rates are collected through the National Ringing Scheme, which provides information on the age and finding circumstances of dead ringed birds, the CES, which records the recapture of previously marked birds and the Retrapping Adults for Survival (RAS) scheme (Section 6.1) which monitors annual changes in the survival rates of targeted species at local scales.
