Press Releases - March/April 2007
Item 4
No. 2007/03/26
March 2007
Make Mother’s Day last the whole
year!
Looking for something different this
Mother’s Day? Why not give your mum a BTO/CJ Garden BirdWatch
gift pack and make your Mother’s day last the whole year.
Not only will your mum be able to enjoy her gift over and over again,
she will be able to do it in the knowledge that she is helping our
garden birds. What’s more she can do it over a cup of tea
- that you make for her!
The gift pack costs £12.00 and contains the Garden BirdWatch
Book (normal price £9.99), which is full of information on
the birds that you are likely to see in your garden, and help you
identify any new visitors that you might get. The pack also contains
all that is needed to get started, plus a copy of the most recent
Bird Table magazine, which members receive quarterly, keeping them
up-to-date with the latest in garden birdwatching.
The scheme monitors the use of gardens by wild birds throughout
the year. Participants are asked to watch the birds in their gardens
once a week for as little as one hour, or more if they prefer, and
submit their records on-line or by paper recording forms once a
quarter. Most people choose to do it over breakfast, as this is
often the busiest time of the day for visiting birds. This information
is then analysed by the British Trust for Ornithology and used to
follow the changing fortunes of our garden birds. In 2006 Goldfinches
were reported visiting the highest percentage of gardens since the
survey began in 1995, continuing the upward trend of these delightful
birds, and conversely, in response to a bumper crop of autumn berries
in the countryside, Blackbirds were reported in the lowest percentage
of gardens.
Paul Stancliffe, of the Garden BirdWatch team, said, “This
is a great gift to give, not only will your mum be able to enjoy
it the whole year through, she will be making a difference to our
garden birds. So go on, this Mother’s Day, give your mum a
gift with a difference, and don’t forget the cups of tea!”

Notes for Editors
- The BTO/CJ Garden BirdWatch is the only nationwide survey of
garden birds to run weekly throughout the year, providing important
information on how birds use gardens, and how this use changes
over time. Currently, some 16,500 people take part in the project.
The BTO/CJ Garden BirdWatch is funded by participants’ contributions
and supported by CJ WildBird Foods Ltd and is the largest year
round survey of garden birds anywhere in the world. For more information
see www.bto.org/gbw
- CJ WildBird Foods is Europe’s leading supplier of bird
food and bird feeding products. CJ WildBird Foods has been responsible
for a number of significant developments within the bird food
and feeding industry, including the introduction of black sunflower
seeds to the UK as a major new bird food and the development of
specialist seed mixes for use in tubular feeders. The company
has also been supporting research into the changing fortunes of
garden bird populations, most notably through the BTO/CJ Garden
BirdWatch.
- Bird Table Magazine is published quarterly and sent free to
all BTO/CJ Garden BirdWatchers. An annual subscription to the
project costs just £12 and all new joiners will receive
a free copy of the BTO/CJ Garden BirdWatch Book (which normally
retails for £9.99).
