National Award for Aylesbury Man
Peter Hearn, from Aylesbury, received
a national award for services to ornithology at the annual conference
of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) this weekend. Presenting
the award on behalf of the BTO, Rosie Hamilton drew particular attention
to Peter’s commitment to promoting the BTO and his selfless
time giving to local conservation activities.
· Peter has been a BTO Regional Development Officer since
1991 and has been a staunch supporter of the BTO in this role, helping
to coordinate the many volunteers who take part in the BTO’s
surveys
· He has been part of the BTO team at the British Birdwatching
Fair since 1991 and has been one of its most successful recruiters.
· Peter was heavily involved in helping organise the BTO’s
own bird fair at Blickling in 1998 and 1999. There is no doubt that
his unstinting help, up to and during the fair, contributed to its
smooth running.
· Peter also contributes locally with his involvement in
the wildlife conservation group for local reservoirs.
Notes for Editors
1) The Jubilee Medal is ‘for committed devotion to the Trust’
– i.e. for contributions to the Trust other than directly
to its scientific work. The Medal was first awarded in 1983, the
year of the BTO’s Golden Jubilee, and is awarded annually.
2) The BTO is the UK’s leading bird research organisation.
Over thirty thousand birdwatchers contribute to the BTO’s
surveys. They collect information that forms the basis of conservation
action in the UK. The BTO maintains a staff of 100 at its offices
in Norfolk and Stirling, who analyse and publicise the results of
project work.
