Conservation successes at Business Sites

The British Trust for Ornithology has today announced the results of the Conservation and Community Categories of the BTO-Hanson Business Bird Challenge 2004. This competition is a celebration of environmental initiatives by over 90 businesses throughout the UK in the categories of Conservation, Community and Birds.

Business sites from a wide range of industries took part, including aggregate, water and power companies. Over the course of the year, company staff worked closely with volunteers to enhance their sites for birds and other wildlife. Several companies use the Challenge as a focus for Biodiversity Action Plans and work with the BTO and local wildlife trusts to limit the effects of potentially damaging activities.

Many sites have established voluntary “Friends of…” groups that provide thousands of hours of invaluable assistance, while others place an emphasis on environmental education, welcoming students from local schools and colleges, as well as providing events and workshops on subjects as diverse as pond dipping, fossil hunts, bat walks and bird identification.

The winning sites are as follows:

Helen Kramer, the Challenge organiser for the British Trust for Ornithology said, “The BTO-Hanson Business Bird Challenge is an extremely rewarding competition. I am always amazed by the hard work and dedication of businesses, staff and volunteers. All the participants should be proud of their achievements.”

The Challenge, organised every other year by the BTO, was sponsored by Hanson, a leading building materials company.

David Weeks, Hanson’s Head of Communications, said, “We have enjoyed our involvement in the Challenge. We have encouraged other companies both within the aggregates industry and outside to get involved and it has also helped us focus on the way we restore our sites and how that can benefit all types of wildlife. The Challenge is a strong reminder that industry and wildlife can co-exist alongside each other

These awards, along with awards for the most birds present, will be presented at Middleton Hall in Staffordshire on Friday, 17 June 2005.
