How to take the Nest Box Challenge

This page contains help on how to register for Nest Box Challenge, set up your garden or site, how to register nest boxes in the garden/site, and how to record what's nesting in them.

Registration

Before you can contribute to Nest Box Challenge, you need to register for a Username and Password. New users, without these access details can register quickly by clicking here. If you are already participating in an online survey organised by the BTO, you don't need to register again - but you do need to 'switch on' your access to Nest box Challenge by visiting BTO Survey Home and clicking on the Setup button for NBC. After your registration or switch on, you will automatically arrive at Nest Box Challenge, and be asked to set up your garden or site.

Registering your garden/site

The garden form asks a number of questions that provide background information about the resources available to birds in your garden/site. Information on the size, content, food you provide and influence of predators all effect birds nesting in boxes. There is help available on the form for most questions to guide you through the process. Once you have entered the information, you can view the details at any time with the 'View garden details' button.

If you have another garden that you wish to register, you can add this using the 'Register 2nd garden?' button. Simply repeat this process for more gardens. Once you have registered you garden or site, you should add a nest box to that location.

Registering a nest box

To set up one or more nest boxes for a particular garden/site, click on 'Register new nest box'. If you have only one garden set up, the postcode will be displayed, but you need to select the correct postcode if there is a choice. Please then fill in the remainder of the form - make sure you provide a sensible name for the box as you will need it to identify it later from other boxes if you have more than one. There is help available on the form for most questions to guide you through the process. You can view all your nest boxes using the 'View my nest boxes button'.

Entering observations of what's in the box

Once your garden garden and nest box(s) are set up, you can then start recording the nesting activities, by clicking on 'Enter my observations'. Please select the nest box to add records for, and the date of the observation (only one per day per box), then press 'Continue....'. Check the box and date are correct, and if so start to fill in the last part of the observation. The questions are tailored to help you through the process, starting with '1. Did you look inside the box?'. Depending on your responses, the questions will adapt to collect the relevant information. There is help available on the form for most questions to guide you through the process. Once you are happy with the details of the observation, click on 'Submit observation details' and your record will be stored in the database. You can review all your observations using the 'View my observations' button.
