The Bucks Bird Club was formed in 1981 with the objective of bringing together all those interested in bird watching in the County. It is a thriving club with a good size, enthusiastic membership.
The aims of the Bucks Bird Club are:
- To educate the public in the knowledge and understanding of birds.
- To collect data and records that are of value to other local and national organisations.
- To support the conservation of habitats that are important for the county’s birds.
- To promote an enjoyable and responsible attitude to bird watching.
The Club meets its aims by:
- Taking part in surveys.
- Running it’s own Garden Bird Survey.
- Offering bursaries and grants to further the understanding and conservation of birds in the county.
- Organising an extensive programme of indoor and field meetings.
- Holding a one-day conference jointly with BTO every two years.
The Club publishes a monthly bulletin with interesting articles, up to date news and a list of bird sightings in the County for the month. The Buckinghamshire Bird Report is an annual publication containing significant records of birds in the county, the ringing report, reports on rare sightings, and selected articles. ‘The Birds of Buckinghamshire’ published in 1993 sets out the history of the 270 species recorded in the county since the Doomsday book. Survey work is presently being undertaken in order to bring this publication up to date.
The county provides a variety of habitats from the Chiltern escarpment, which provides a migration route through the county, to woodland, farmland and some small areas of water and heath land.
One of the county’s rarest breeding birds is the Firecrest.
