Garden Mammals

A number of mammal species use our gardens, although some of these (like Pine Marten and Edible Dormouse) only use gardens within localised parts of the country. Some mammal species occur in all sorts of gardens and perhaps the most familiar of these are the Grey Squirrel and Red Fox. Others also occur within gardens across the UK but are difficult for the casual observer to identify (for example the various bat, mouse and vole species).

Many BTO/CJ Garden BirdWatchers take an interest in the mammals that visit their gardens and now record them as part of the project. During 2002 and 2003 we piloted a scheme for recording how mammals use gardens throughout the year. The results of this work are being analysed during 2004, with the aim of beginning full recording of mammals from 2005. Full results will be made available from this web page early in summer 2004.

Information on the different mammal species, their behaviour and how they use gardens, will also be made available from this page. The first of these species accounts should appear in April 2004, with further species to be added over the following months. Click here to access the mammal species accounts.

Mammal recording within the BTO/CJ Garden BirdWatch project is part of a wider suite of schemes looking at the changing fortunes of our mammal populations. These schemes are coordinated through the Tracking Mammals Partnership and more information can be found about the Partnership either by clicking here or by clicking on the Tracking Mammals Partnership logo which appears at the bottom of each mammal page.
