Butterflies and moths

Butterflies and, to a lesser extent, moths, are among the most familiar of garden insects. Their often attractive colours have brought pleasure to many people and they have a special place in our appreciation of the natural environment. While our interest in butterflies is long-established (and more advanced than in almost any other country), we have still allowed the populations of many species to decline. For some species, such declines have resulted in local or even national extinction, so it is important to understand their ecology, behaviour and habitat requirements if we are to conserve them for future generations.

Information on the different butterfly species, their behaviour and how they use gardens, is being added to the Garden BirdWatch web site, based on results from our other wildlife survey. The first of these species accounts appeared in April 2004, with further species to be added over the following months.

We hope to add some information on one or two moth species as well at some stage.
