The
Garden Bird Health initiative is a highly collaborative
three year project launched in 2005. The project sets out
to establish a surveillance system by which causes of garden
bird mortality and disease can be recorded and investigated.
Through a network
of volunteer recorders, drawn from the BTO/CJ Garden BirdWatch,
and with additional assistance from the wider public, we hope
to learn more about the processes behind disease risk and
how this affects birds utilising garden feeding stations.
The results gathered
through this project will be used to evaluate supplementary
feeding practices and to support sound advice on best practice
methods for feeding wild birds. The project was launched during
Spring 2005, with systematic monitoring at c.1,000 gardens
across Britain beginning in October 2005.
