Defra House Sparrow Conference
On Friday 20 February
2004, Defra, in conjunction with the BTO, RSPB and the Greater London
Authority, hosted a one day conference on House Sparrows, bringing
together House Sparrow experts from various organisations.
In February 2003, a
government minister undertook an adjournment debate with Graham
Allen on the plight of wild birds. The content of this debate concentrated
heavily on the House Sparrow. As a result of the debate, the minister
commited Defra to holding a one-day conference to discuss known
facts about the House Sparrow and to produce a leaflet explaining
how persons and communities can improve the populations of House
Sparrows in their local area. This leaflet was launched at the conference.
Several BTO speakers
gave keynote presentations at the conference, including:
Dr Humphrey
Crick - historical review of House Sparrows in Britain
and overview of breeding biology.
Dr Rob Robinson
- the Defra House Sparrow study (coordinated by BTO).
Mike Toms
- the BTO House Sparrow Survey and Garden BirdWatch. (click here
