Wildlife Gardening

Nestboxes for birds

Although many of the birds visiting gardens do so for the supplementary food we provide, others use gardens as places to nest and rear their young. Most gardens do not have a wide range of nest sites, so the provision of suitable nestboxes can be beneficial.

Nestboxes come in a wide range of designs and can either be made yourself or bought ready-made from mail order companies or through garden centres. When buying nestboxes from garden centres it is best to avoid some of the more ornate (and hence less suitable) ones. Particularly avoid buying bird tables with nestboxes built into the roof. These are quite unsuitable.

Mail order companies specialising in bird food and nestboxes are good places to buy nestboxes

It can be great fun to make your own nestboxes and the BTO has produced a nestbox guide that can be purchased by telephoning the BTO on 01842-750050 or by emailing info@bto.org.
