Dr Chris Wernham
Position
Senior Research Ecologist & Head of BTO Scotland
Role
I am responsible for the running of the BTO Scotland office and its scientific research, and for strategic development of the office in liaison with the Director of Development at HQ.
Qualifications
BSc (Hons) Ecology, University of Stirling, 1985-1989
PhD “Ecology and energetics of breeding Puffins: variation in individual reproductive effort and success”, University of Stirling, 1990-1993
Research Interests/Responsibilities
I have particular research interests and experience in avian demography and migration/movements, having previously held the posts of Senior Populations Biologist overseeing the Ringing Scheme, and team leader for the BTO Migration Atlas project. I now have responsibility for developing a suite of research that is particularly relevant to Scottish birds and habitats, and for providing Scotland-specific input to UK-wide BTO projects. I am currently managing some raptor research projects (correlates of the spatial distribution and abundance of Peregrines; pilot survey methods for Short-eared Owls) and am one of the editors of the Field Guide to Raptor Survey and Monitoring. I also have responsibility for ensuring that the Scotland office has high profile amongst BTO volunteers, research customers and the public.
Other Information
Honorary Lecturer, SBES, University of Stirling
BTO Scotland representative on the Scottish Raptor Monitoring Group
Licensed bird ringer
