Business Bird Challenge 2008
|
 |
A celebration of the partnership
between business and the environment
In Britain today, more people are
members of environmental organisations than political parties.
In this climate of environmental awareness, it is vital
for businesses to demonstrate a commitment to conservation.
The results for your business can be astounding, improving
competitiveness and building trust between employees and
the local community.
|
| What
is the Challenge?
The Business
Bird Challenge began in 1994 and is a unique partnership between
businesses, the BTO and local communities which encourages
biodiversity on business and industrial sites. Held every
two years, the Challenge has become a celebration of environmental
initiatives by businesses throughout the UK, in the categories
of Conservation, Community and Birds.
Who participated?
A wide variety
of companies entered the Challenge. Sites ranged from working
quarries, power stations and oil refineries, to research establishments,
company headquarters and restored nature reserves. Categories
included Wetland, Quarry, Land Management, but were tailored
to allow for the largest diversity of participants, so that
each site had a good opportunity to win. The Challenge is
not just for big businesses, it is about maximising the potential
of business sites for birds and other wildlife whatever the
size. |

| This
year also marks the first ‘Outstanding contribution
to Bird Conservation Award', presented by the BTO. This
was awarded to Anglian Water’s Rutland Water, which
is a shining example of how success can be achieved when conservation
issues are integrated into the initial planning of a site.
Years of commitment and vision by the company, staff and partner
organisations, have resulted in an exceptional site for birds.
The 190 species of bird that visited the site through 2008
are testament to the hard work by Anglian Water, Leicestershire
& Rutland Wildlife Trust and all their staff and volunteers. |
