Long-term trend
UK: Rapid decline over last 25 years

Status summary
The UK House Sparrow population was not monitored well by the CBC before the mid-1970s, especially as urban areas and gardens were largely excluded from CBC coverage. However, data collected under the CBC indicate a rapid decline in abundance over the last 25 years, which is very similar to that shown by the BTO's Garden Bird Feeding Survey (Glue 1994) and is supported by other data and many anecdotal reports that have generated a great deal of conservation concern. The decline is likely to have been driven by reductions in over-winter survival (Siriwardena et al. 1999) and has been linked to a range of changes in rural and urban habitats. Possible explanations for the decrease in House Sparrow abundance include reductions in the amount of grain spilt during agricultural operations, increases in cat predation and the use of toxic additives in unleaded petrol.
