Status Summary
This species is poorly monitored by standard BTO monitoring schemes due to its low population density and unobtrusive habits. Its distribution has spread markedly northwards in England since the 1970s (Gibbons et al. 1993), perhaps linked to increases in its dragonfly prey supplies (Prince & Clarke 1995) and a decreasing dependency on its traditional heathland habitat. Small annual samples of nest record cards permit analysis only of brood size, which appears not to have changed substantially over the last 30 years.
