Status Summary
The BBS provides the first annual, national monitoring of this species and prior trends are poorly known, although increases are believed to have followed reductions in persecution and the creation of habitat in the form of gravel pits (Gibbons et al. 1993). The BBS indicates population stability over the last six years. Winter numbers, monitored by WeBS, increased during the 1980s and are now stable (Musgrove et al. 2001).
