Red Grouse Lagopus lagopus

Red Grouse by John Harding

Walk through moorland in summer and the tell-tale 'Go-back Go-back' call of the Red Grouse will alert you to its presence even if you can't see it lurking in the heather.

The Red Grouse has a distinctly northern and western distribution - we'll need your help in its strongholds to find this and related upland species.

Note that the 2007-11 maps (below left) reflect only records submitted so far online . We will update these with records from paper forms at the end of each fieldwork season. Check back soon to see how the picture develops. And why not take part and help fill the gaps.
