Space for the Future
Building work to the Resource Centre and Chris Mead Library
is now complete. Together with the Nunnery Garden, these new
facilities provide significant benefits to the Trust, its
members and supporters and the general public.

The Max Nicholson Building
The new Resource Centre is housed within the renamed
Max Nicholson Building.
Max Nicholson founded the BTO in 1932, after organising
the first national census of heronries, the BTO's longest
running survey. He led the BTO's development for many
years and was a staunch supporter until his death in
2004. Max was an established writer, journalist, civil
servant, environmentalist and general goad to the establishment!
The Trust awarded him a unique Founder's Medal in 1991.

Our Rich Heritage
This project has expanded greatly from the original plans,
enabling us to increase meeting and office space, as well
as providing further archive facilities for the storage of
over 250,000 maps and other historical datasets. A new extension
to the Nunnery houses the Reception, provides additional archive
storage facilities and space to run both BTO General and Ringing
Sales. |

Library Update
The Chris Mead Library is now completed. Thank you
to everyone who has so generously donated to this major
project.
This library commemorates the life and achievements
of Chris, who worked tirelessly for the BTO for over
forty years - within the ringing unit, as an ambassador
and latterly the press consultant. |
|
The library is now located on an impressive mezzanine
structure, which includes the librarian's office, a
lift, and work spaces to accommodate visiting academics,
scientists etc. Beneath the mezzanine is rolling storage
for almost 100 years of ornithological archives.
A major scanning project has taken
place to digitally store a vast range of archive materials.

The Max Nicholson Building and the Chris Mead
Library were offically opened by HRH Prince Philip and V Mead
on 1st August 2006. HRH was introduced to all the BTO staff
and the partners involved in this immense restoration project.
The Resource Centre Project has been part-financed by the
following organisations.
We would like to thank them for their support.
