Nightingale Appeal

This appeal was launched in April 1998 to raise money for woodland
research. Much of the early work has been focused on Nightingales,
especially the Nightingale Survey which took place in the summer
of 1999
Thanks to the tremendous help of members and friends we have been
able to fund the following projects:
- The 1999 Nightingale
Survey (also supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Charitable
Trust)
- 1999 surveys of Nightingales in random squares - looking at
potential habitat (also supported by the Garfield Weston Foundation)
- Nest record analyses of Willow Tit, Marsh Tit and Nightingales
(also supported by CJ WildBird Foods)
- The BTO's contribution to the Common
Birds Census in woodlands for 1999 and 2000 (CBC is supported
by the JNCC)
- A detailed Nightingale habitat survey in sites in the South
Midlands, which took place in summer 2000 (also supported by several
local charitable trusts and BTO members)
We are still seeking funding to:
- Bring together information on other declining woodland specialists,
such as Bullfinch and Spotted Flycatcher
- nvestigate survey methods for breeding Woodcock
- Look in detail at Nightingales breeding in traditional woodland
sites in inland East Anglia
- Work with other organisations to investigate the effects of
deer on English woodlands and their bird communities.
An exciting Fenland Nightingale
project, funded by Anglian Water has also taken place.

Nightingales: A celebration
A spectacular CD, dedicated to the Nightingale, was produced for
this Appeal. The main part of the recording is nearly an hour of
modern Nightingale recordings, from different parts of the country
and at different times of day. Accompaniment is provided by warblers,
owls, woodcock, muntjac etc. Also included are historic recordings,
expertly re-mastered, including the first ever bird recording, the
famous 1927 recording of a bird singing as Beatrice Harrison played
her cello and the competition between Nightingales and RAF bombers
recorded in Surrey in 1942.
Copies of this wonderful CD are still available
for £10.00 (inclusive of p&p within the UK).
