BTO Summer Bird Count 2009

Swallow by Kevin Carlson Keswick by Tommy Holden Robin by John Harding

Thank you for taking part in the Summer Bird Count 2009! Don't forget to return your form and sponsorship money by Friday 9 October to be entered into the Grand Prize Draw for a superb pair of Swarovski 8 x 32 EL’s.

To support our 'Out of Africa' appeal, we have moved our annual bird count into the much warmer, summer months, which I am sure those of you who have previousy braved our New Year counts will be glad to hear! No need for a thermos and layers of warm clothes - we hope! Instead, pack a picnic, suntan lotion and binoculars and make yourself comfortable for the BTO's Summer Bird Count.

Following on from the worrying news that the Cuckoo and other African migrants including the Yellow Wagtail (pictured) and the Wood Warbler, have been added to the Birds for Conservation Concern red list, we are even more determined to raise funds to investigate what could be responsible for these declines.

If you would like to support the Summer Bird Count or want to encourage your friends and family to join in, read on. It would really help our appeal and you may even catch a last glimpse of some of our migrant species before they head back to Africa for the winter.

Take Part!

The Summer Bird Count 2009 is a fantastic way to combine something you enjoy with raising valuable funds. By taking part you can help species like the Cuckoo, so get ready to start counting. Choose a day between 28th August and 14th September 2009, a location to birdwatch (this could be your garden, on your holiday or a day trip), and then approach your generous friends and family for sponsorship.

Use your BTO Bird Count form to note down any sponsorship you are promised and also to keep a record of what you see on the day. If you and/ or a friend would like to join us for the Bird Count 2009 then you can download your forms by clicking here.*

However you choose to take part, be it a day out walking or by making it into a family outing, the more bird species you see, the more money you raise to help us research and aid the conservation of our much loved migrants!

If you don't feel able to ask for sponsorship and would rather make a donation instead then please feel free to do so.

Remember, all your sightings are useful to us. Why not add them into BirdTrack and make your birdwatching count.

Don't forget to return your form and sponsorship money by Friday 9 October to be entered into the Grand Prize Draw for a superb pair of Swarovski 8 x 32 EL’s.

A 24 hour Summer Bird Count!
John Harry has taken on the challenge and will be birdwatching for a 24 hour stretch at the RSPB reserve at Frampton Marsh for the BTO Summer Bird Count. He will be spotting from 10am on the 1st September til 10am the next day. Thank you John, we think this is a first; it certainly wasn't attempted before the Count moved into summer!

John explains why he is supporting the Out of Africa Appeal
“I decided to do something this summer, as it’s been just over a year since I got back into birdwatching after a long break. After my first season of Atlas-ing, I thought I would contribute to a cause I had not heard of before. The plight of migrants has had a noticeable effect on my birding this year – I have yet to observe a Spotted Flycatcher or Nightingale for my year list, no matter how many visits I have made to past known locations. Research in their wintering grounds and throughout their migratory journeys will be vital in gaining knowledge to aid the conservation of these migrant species, before they disappear forever.”
