Frequently asked questions

Why is it important to make a Will?

A Will reflects your wishes about whom you would like to benefit from your money and possessions. Many people make false assumptions about what happens to their estate if they do not leave a Will, which can lead to lengthy and expensive complications for their family to sort out. A Will ensures that those you care about - family, friends and worthy causes - are all looked after, so that you have peace of mind.

When should I make a Will?
You can make a Will at any time and then regularly review it and alter it if necessary, particularly if your circumstances change, such as the arrival of children or grandchildren or if you buy a house.

Who can write my Will?
It is possible to do this yourself, however unless you are legally trained you run the risk of drafting a Will in a way that may be unclear. A tiny error could invalidate the whole document. Talking to a Solicitor and getting them to draft or change your Will ensures that the wording is precise and that your exact wishes are carried out.

How do I Ieave the BTO a gift if I already have a Will?
Speak to your Solicitor who can add a bequest by means of a Codicil. This means there is no need to make a new Will. When completed and witnessed, a Codicil becomes a legal part of your Will.

Are there tax advantages of leaving money to a charity?

The Inheritance Tax threshold currently stands at £325,000 (2009 -2010). Any value of your estate over this figure will be liable for 40% tax, however gifts to charities are awarded before the estate is valued. Making gifts to those people and causes you care about during your lifetime can reduce this liability and leave a lasting gift for future generations. For more information on Inheritance Tax go to the 'Planning your Will' page for a link to the HM Revenues & Customs website.

Any size gift we are left is gratefully received and hugely appreciated.
It won't cost you anything in your lifetime but will help to ensure that generations to come will continue to enjoy birds as much as you do.
