Planning your Will

If you are intending to make a Will it is useful to have answers to the following questions:

What do you own?
Make a list of the things you own and their approximate value.
What are your current sources of income?

What do you owe?
This includes hire purchase agreements and loans as well as a mortgage. You will also need to consider anything that is owed to you.

What investments do you have?
You will need the details of bank and savings accounts, premium and savings bonds, PEPs, ISA, stocks and shares etc.

Who you will be your executors?
You can choose between one and four people to ensure that your wishes are carried out. These can be your solicitor, friend or relation or even the main beneficiaries.

Who do you want to benefit from your Will?

Your solicitor will need to know which portions of your estate are to go to which beneficiary.

Are there special items which you want to go to special people?
If you would like particular possessions to go to specific people, you will need to provide an exact description of the items for inclusion in your Will.

Have you thought about charities?
You can use your Will to support causes which are important to you. Gifts to charities are awarded before the estate is valued for Inheritance Tax so giving a gift to a charity may mean that you can avoid paying some or all of this on your estate. A legacy gift is gratefully received and of huge benefit to the BTO in its mission to inform conservation.

For more information on Inheritance tax visit www.hmrc.gov.uk/inheritancetax/intro/basics.
