Getting Involved

BTO membership is open to all. It is not necessary to be a BTO member to take part in a project, although most of our volunteers become committed to the aims of the Trust and subsequently join. We encourage any birdwatcher, whether a member or not, to contact the member of staff responsible for a survey that sounds appropriate for their level of skill and amount of spare time, and discuss it with them. Or you can contact our volunteer Regional Representative in your area, their details are listed on the maps under BTO in your area. Garden BirdWatch is suitable for anyone who can identify common garden birds. Nest records can be collected by anybody, wherever you are in the British Isles. A complete list of current surveys is available here. Anybody can participate actively in bird ringing under the supervision of a qualified ringer (minimum age 16 for a conditional permit allowing unsupervised ringing after training, 18 for the use of mist nets.)
